Aetiology of Acromegaly

Benign pituitary tumours are by far the most common cause of acromegaly; however, very rarely, pituitary carcinomas may be responsible. Pituitary tumours may be associated with other endocrine adenomas (e.g. multiple endocrine neoplasia Type I) which most commonly involve the parathyroid glands, resulting in hypercalcaemia.
